Song of the Week – Bonus Week! Bright Eyes and Sarah
Sikman the Stout was a brewer in 1000 Eyes. In fact, he made an ale called Sikman’s Stout.
This is important because he made me one of those “offers you can’t refuse.” See it happened that Sikman was both the Baronesses’ Champion of 1000 Eyes and the Princess’ Champion for the first princess of the principality of Artemisia. He desired to honor both these fine ladies and came to me with a proposition. If I would write a song for each of them, he would supply me with beer at any 1000 Eyes event that we both attended. So, of course, I did. And he did, as long as he was active.
It was quite a challenge to me to try to write two distinct songs in a limited time frame. I am more of a plodder than a soarer in that department. The songs did get written and seemed well-received when they were debuted for the ladies in question. At the time I thought them just adequate, doggerel-for-hire as it were. Looking back on them now, I think they are more sentimental and seem to conjure the spirit of the ladies well for the time.
So for you Allessandra (Zahara?) and for you Sarah, or Sara, not really sure (and in spite of what came after)
